1. Introduction
Gneiss Labs ("we", "us") built Quartz to be local-first: your focus sessions belong to you and stay on your device unless you choose to sync them. This policy explains exactly what Quartz stores, what leaves your device, and your rights regarding that information.
2. Data Stored on Your Device
Quartz works fully offline. The following is stored locally on your device and is not transmitted to us unless you enable sync (see Section 4):
- Tasks — task names and organization you create
- Sessions — session start/end times, durations, and any comments you add in session summaries
- Settings — app preferences such as theme and timer options
If you use Quartz without an account, we collect none of this data. Deleting the app deletes this local data.
3. Account Information
Creating an account is optional and only needed for premium features. You can sign in with Apple or Google, which shares your name and email address (Apple lets you hide your email). We use this only to identify your account and provide sync. Authentication is handled by Supabase, our backend provider.
4. Cloud Sync (Premium)
If you subscribe to Quartz Premium and sign in, your tasks, session history, and settings are synced to our servers so your data is backed up and available across devices. This synced copy is the data we hold about you. It is:
- Encrypted in transit and at rest
- Isolated per account — database access rules ensure only your account can read your data
- Never used for advertising, profiling, or sold to anyone
5. Crash Reports
Quartz uses Firebase Crashlytics to diagnose crashes. When the app crashes, we receive the device model, OS version, and a technical crash trace. Crash reports do not include your tasks, sessions, or comments. We do not use behavioral analytics — we do not track how you use the app.
6. Push Notifications
If you enable notifications, a device push token is registered with Firebase Cloud Messaging to deliver them. The token identifies your device for delivery only and can be revoked by disabling notifications in your system settings.
7. Purchases
Premium subscriptions are processed by the App Store or Google Play. We never see your payment details — we only receive confirmation of your subscription status.
8. Data Export
You can export your session history from the app at any time. The export is generated on your device and shared only where you send it.
9. What We Do Not Collect
Quartz collects no location data, contacts, photos, or advertising identifiers. There are no ads, no third-party trackers, and no social features.
10. Information Sharing
We do not sell your data. We share it only:
- With the service providers named above (Supabase for authentication and sync, Firebase for crash reports and notifications) as needed to operate the app
- When required by law or to protect the rights and safety of users
- In the event of a business transfer, with 30 days' notice
11. Data Retention
Synced data is retained while your account is active. If you delete your account, your synced data is removed from our servers within 30 days. Crash logs are retained for up to 90 days. Local data on your device is yours — remove it by deleting the app.
12. Your Rights
You may request to access, correct, or delete your personal data at any time by contacting us at [email protected]. EU/EEA and UK users have additional rights under GDPR, and California users have rights under CCPA. We respond to requests within 30 days.
13. Children
Quartz is not intended for children under 13 (or 16 in the EU). We do not knowingly collect data from children under these ages.
14. Changes to This Policy
We may update this policy from time to time. Changes will be posted in the app with at least 30 days' notice before taking effect.
